There are many stories about the origins of Wing Chun kung fu, most revolving around the life of a woman, Yim Wing Chun. Although in recent times, controversy has arisen regarding the origins of this fascinating martial art, stating that she was only a myth or an alias, used as a cover, for someone else to be credited with creating this system of fighting.

Whether it is true or not that Yim Wing Chun was real, or had anything to do with creating this system of kung fu is really a moot point at this time in history, as we'll never be sure of how much of any stories are real or not. For those who require or feel the need for a history of this art, we submit a version given by the late Grandmaster Yip Man, whom many regard as the one person whose efforts indirectly released Wing Chun kung fu to the world at large.

The underlying principle that may appeal to all, whether the system was developed by this woman or not, is that it has a systematic and logical approach to dealing with an opponent who will most probably be bigger and stronger than you.
